History of Montessori Children's House

Montessori Children's House is proud to continue our tradition of being the longest operating Montessori school in the Indianapolis area. Our school was established in 1963 by Phyllis Matthews who ran it for a year in a local church, before purchasing the property at 222 S. 4th Avenue in Beech Grove, where Montessori Children’s House is currently operated.

After working with Phyllis for four years, Paula Evans (the current director and elementary teacher) bought the school in 1978. In the summer of 2001, we were finally able to purchase the adjoining vacant lots, so as to create some “breathing room” for the school.

The new space has allowed us to stage wonderful learning opportunities, one of the children's favorites is “Dance of the Planets,” with children moving like planets or asteroids around the child who is the “Sun.”

Along with a children's village,we have also had the opportunity to plant our own vegetable garden where the children look for ripe cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, etc. to pick and share with their class. Children pick the vegetables and help make a salad for everyone’s snack.
